Lucy Was Driving

Reviewed by Jo

So here it is, my first real music review. No pressure…

The lucky band in question is none other than Finnish band Lucy Was Driving. Now, I will state that by no means am I professional music critic. I don’t have a degree in Musicology, and I can barely play Ode to Joy on the flute. However, I am a college student. What does that have to do with being a music reviewer, you ask? Well, not much, really. Music isn’t something I study, it’s just the thing that keeps me going while I study. That being said, the importance of music is not something to be underestimated, as we’ve all probably seen days when music was the only thing keeping our sanity intact, and I am appreciative of this effect music can have. But enough chit-chat, on with the review.

At first glance, Lucy may appear to be your average everyman alternative band, but dig a little deeper and listen to the lyrics. Taking into consideration that Koskelo, the lead singer, is finishing up his PhD in Physics, it becomes more clear why this band seems a little different somehow.

After running through Lucy’s self-titled album, I find that their music takes a refreshing deviation from the usual topic of the various stages of relationships like breaking up, falling in love, being cheated on, etc.. Not that there is anything wrong with those subjects, but once in a while, it’s good to hear lyrics about issues like consumerism and over-consumption (Can’t Get Enough), and the pressure placed on women by society to be perfect (Miss America). Their music style is varied, akin to that of the well known alternative rock of the Foo Fighters, Panic at the Disco, and lesser known here in the states, The Rasmus. The style of Lucy ranges from the energetic poppy sound of Ashtray, to the melancholy, slightly more languid power ballad, Out of Reach.
Those of you who are music snobs would do well to take note that Lucy Was Driving is still so fresh to the music scene that they don’t have a Wikipedia page, and that they were mentioned on City.fi in 2009 as a candidate to be the ‘next big thing’ in Finland.

So there you have it, people. Now’s the time to visit their site at LucyWasDriving.Com and be that person who can say with total confidence that you heard these guys before they hit the mainstream.
