Hypnogonia

Where in Finland are you from?

Originally I’m from Närpiö in Ostrobothnia, but I have just moved to Helsinki.

How would you describe your band for those who don’t know you?

I listen to a lot of different bands and genres and this gives me a lot of influences which effects my music. I’m also not afraid to experiment. So it’s pretty much experimental music with a lot of influences. A musical roller-coaster.

When did you form as a group?

Well, it’s a solo project but I would say it was at end of March 2010 when the idea was starting to become reality.

What was the inspiration for your recent album?

A lot! Musically it’s pretty much everything I listen too from grunge and electronica to psychedelia and metal. Lyrically, it’s much about me and my own life, thoughts, ideas and experiences. I also often get inspired by the more depressing and sad parts of life.

What other releases do you have?

Pure Ash Tray is my debut, so none.

What is your favorite song on your most recent album?

“Now?”. I really like that one because the lyrics are very special to me and I think it’s a really interesting song in many different ways (with the kraut-rock-influenced second part that jumps right at you for instance). Also it’s the longest and one of the best songs I’ve written so far.

Do you have any gigs coming up?

Unfortunately not. I’ve been thinking about playing at some small places here in Helsinki just for fun. I dream a lot of finding someone to jam with here in Helsinki and be able to start playing live. Hopefully it will happen someday.

What’s your favorite type of venue to play?

I haven’t really experienced that much. It’s fun to play anywhere as long as you’re able to do your own thing and people enjoy it.

If you could play anywhere in the world this week, where would it be?

Woah, though one! I can’t decide. I would appreciate pretty much any gig.

Do you have a Website, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter etc?

And in a couple of weeks on Spotify as well..

What are your influences as a band?

Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Opeth, Nirvana, Korn, Alice in Chains, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, The Cure, Björk, System of a Down, Type O Negative, Mad Season, Sigur Rós, King Crimson, Bass Communion, Gavin Harrison, Richard Barbieri, Colin Edwin, John Wesley, Continuum, Incredible Expanding Mindfuck, Blackfield, No-Man, Opus Symbiosis, Japan, Jeff Buckley, Simon & Garfunkel, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Stars of the Lid, Frank Zappa, Gösta Berlings Saga, Kingston Wall, Brightblack Morning Light, Bloodbath, Circlevicious, So Long Sisters, Regina Spektor, Soap&Skin, Brian Eno, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Lamb of God, Jon Lajoie, Ashra, Flying Saucer Attack, Can, The Knife, Vidna Obmana.

People who enjoy your music tend to like what other bands?

It depends a lot I think, but sometimes the same that influences me I guess.

Are you signed to a label?

Nope, some day hopefully!

Where do you think you’ll be as a band in 5 years?

The dream is that Hypnogonia would evolve into a whole band that releases records, play live and that still is appreciated and enjoyed by our fans.

Is there anything else people should know about Hypogonia?

Yeah, I would like to credit the ones who contributed to Pure Ash Tray:

  • Ash Tray co-written with Heidi Enbacka
  • Second guitar solo on Innocent No More by Christian Holmlund (Circlevicious)
  • Female speech-sample on “Now?” by acclivity of freesound.org.
