Ocean Within

Where in Finland are you from?

-We are from a west coast city called Pori. It’s nice and small, and here are lot’s of people playing the same kind of music as we do, and also listening, and it’s really cool.

How would you describe your band for those who don’t know you?

-Our music is traditional metal’s subgenre metalcore, with some progressive vibes. It’s pretty aggressive but still the melodies are really really important and will play even bigger role on the material we’re working on right now.

When did you form as a group?

-In 2008. We have been through quite a few line-up changes, and the music has evolved with them. Two years is a long time and just within the last months our music has found it’s true shape.

What was the inspiration for your recent album?

-Our last EP, Leaders, was mainly written by our guitarist Joonas, with help from the other guitarist Petteri and drummer Tuomas. The inspiration came from the music we listened to during the writing process. Influences came from many different genres, bands we sound like, like Architects, Born of Osiris, Circle of Contempt, but also from very different bands, like Mew, Lapko and Explosions in the Sky.

What other releases do you have?

-Our first demo ‘Spells of Coming’. It was more immature than Leaders, and we were still looking for our own sound back then. But still, there are some nice riffs and breakdowns, so you can expect hearing material from it also on our gigs!

What is your favorite song on your most recent album?

-Personally I would say TranShifts, but I believe that we all have our favourite songs and moments in the EP.

Do you have any gigs coming up?

-Yes! At the end of this month we will end our gig break that has been going on since summer. We have the honour to share the stage with Vildhjarta etc in Pori, Breakdown Leftovers II. It will definitely be an awesome night, and we hope to see lots of people there! It’s also our first gig with the new line-up.

What’s your favorite type of venue to play?

-It’s not about the venue, but the people who come there. The right amount of people who really enjoy listening to the bands they have paid for really makes the night, and the feeling you get on the stage is awesome when everything works right. But of course it’s important that the technique etc works as it should.

If you could play anywhere in the world this week, where would it be?

-It would be somewhere in the US, where this genre of music is big. Some big venue with lots of people and great bands could do!

Do you have a Website, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter etc?

-Yes, we got it all! Go to our MySpace, and you will find all the info and links there.

What are your influences as a band?

-As I mentioned before, influences come from many different genres. Anyway, the so-called “sumeriancore” is a big influence for us, and the biggest influences are bands from Sumerian Records’ roster.

People who enjoy your music tend to like what other bands?

-Circle of Contempt, Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, We Are The Illusion, August Burns Red, Periphery… the list goes on.

Are you signed to a label?

-Nope. Currently looking for management, but a label is also a big goal for us. Though things have been going pretty good with the DIY-style also.

Where do you think you’ll be as a band in 5 years?

-Hopefully writing music, touring and hanging with good people. You never know where life will take you, but the music will absolutely be with us, whatever it shall be.

Is there anything else people should know about Ocean Within?

-Visit our MySpace, download/buy the music, spread the word about us, come to gigs and hang out with us etc! It’s always a great pleasure to hear that people have enjoyed our music in some way.
