Saturday Night Evil
Deathlike Silence
Reviewed by Kaheli
The sophomore album from Deathlike Silence, ‘Saturday Night Evil’, has all the necessary ingredients to make this a must-have in your musical collection. The first thing that really struck this discerning listener was the guitar riffs. Solo riffs that sent me catapulting back to the 70′s metal scene. Reminiscent of a time when the guitar wasn’t just an instrument for playing, but an appendage of the player himself. By the third song, I was so focused on what the next song would hold in the way of these amazing riffs that I soon realized I had totally blocked the vocals out. Starting over….
Ms. Maya has bestowed upon us one of her finest vocal performances. Throughout the entire album she delivers with a voice that isn’t operatic smooth nor is it gravelly dirt-like. But somewhere in between, flowing harmoniously like a prima ballerina glides across the stage in a well-orchestrated dance. Delivering lyrics about darkness, death and fear. Think block-buster horror movie sans the video and you have ‘Saturday Night Evil’. Between the amazing guitar riffs, fantastic vocals and well-written lyrics, you’ll soon find yourself full of excitement, anticipation and even a bit of trepidation as you await the next song. You’ll soon find yourself playing the music out in your mind as if you’re actually watching a movie and this is its score.
This is an album that will surely continue to reside in my playlist for a long time to come. Recommended listening is ‘Trapped In The Night’, ‘Dagon’ and ‘Shadows Fall’…heck, the whole album is worth hearing. Repeatedly. From the opening chords of the first song to the very last. Don’t forget to use repeat. You’ll want it.
